Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is an initiative?

An initiative is achieved by writing a law, submitting it to the attorney general, then receiving a title and summary from the office of the Attorney General. Those carrying the initiative then print petitions and must gather the equivalent of 8% (for a constitutional amendment) or 5% (for a statute) of the number of people who voted in the most recent election for governor. The signed petitions are then sent to the California Secretary of State for validation.

Why is it necessary?

In the case of SB 48 an initiative is necessary to Stop and repeal SB 48. Unfortunately, the referendum fell just short of the signatures needed to Stop SB 48. The next available tool that we have to stop this law is an initiative. We must again gather 700,000 NEW and VALID signatures for this initiative. We must pass the CLASS Act initiative to Stop SB 48.

I already signed the referendum do I need to sign again?

Yes! The CLASS Act is a NEW effort to Stop SB 48. We must again gather 700,000 VALID signatures.

What is the deadline for gathering signatures?

Petitions must be returned to us by July 11th.

How will this Stop SB 48?

The CLASS Act Initiative supersedes the changes that SB 48 made to the Education Codes.

What is the difference between an initiative and a referendum?

A referendum, often referred to as “the people’s veto” is a tool the people can use to recall legislation that has passed through the legislature and is now law. An initiative is a new piece of legislation that is written, and if it qualifies, is then submitted to the people on the ballot for a vote.
